Firearm safety is crucial to prevent accidental discharges, injuries, or fatalities. Adhering to fundamental firearm safety rules ensures that guns are handled responsibly. Here are the commonly accepted fundamental rules of firearm safety and the reasons each is important:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
Why? Assuming a gun is unloaded has been the cause of many accidental discharges. By always treating a firearm as if it’s loaded, even if you “know” it isn’t, you will handle it with the respect and caution it demands.

  2. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
Why? The only sure way to prevent an unintended person or object from being struck by a bullet is to control where the muzzle is pointed. A “safe direction” can vary depending on circumstances but is always a direction where an unintentional discharge would not cause injury to a person or damage to property.

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Why? Keeping the finger outside the trigger guard and off the trigger is crucial to prevent unintentional discharges. Many accidents occur when a person stumbles, is startled, or mistakenly pulls the trigger when they didn’t intend to shoot.

  4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
Why? Before shooting, you must properly identify your target and ensure it’s what you intend to shoot. Equally crucial is knowing what’s beyond your target (like other people, animals, or structures) because bullets can travel a great distance and penetrate various materials. This rule prevents unintended targets from being struck.

  5. Keep firearms unloaded when not in use.
Why? Storing firearms unloaded reduces the chance of an accidental discharge. This rule is especially important in households or environments where others might come into contact with the firearm, such as children or visitors.

  6. Store firearms and ammunition separately and securely.
Why? Separating firearms from their ammunition and ensuring both are stored securely reduces the risk of unauthorized or accidental access and use. Proper storage can prevent theft, children accessing firearms, or other unauthorized persons from accessing and using them.

  7. Use the right ammunition for your firearm.
Why? Using incorrect or damaged ammunition can cause a firearm to malfunction, which may result in injury or damage to the firearm. Always refer to the firearm’s manufacturer guidelines for appropriate ammunition.

  8. Regularly maintain and clean your firearm.
Why? A well-maintained firearm is less likely to malfunction. Regular cleaning and inspection can also provide an opportunity to identify and rectify potential issues before they become major problems.

  9. Wear appropriate protective gear, like safety glasses and ear protection.
Why? Firearms are loud and can produce debris or hot gases, which can be harmful. Protective gear helps prevent hearing damage and protects the eyes from potential harm.

  10. Familiarize yourself with the firearm’s operation.
Why? Knowing how a firearm functions, including its safety features and how to load and unload it safely, is crucial. Lack of familiarity can lead to mistakes or mishandling.
These rules are foundational, and they apply to everyone, regardless of their experience level with firearms.

Safe firearm handling is a responsibility that all gun owners and users must take seriously.
